Imagine you purchased some cool new 4K TV and you want to display photos at maximum resolution from your laptop or perhaps use the display for your huuuge Excel spreadsheets, but your old crappy laptop says it cannot go beyond fullHD (1920×1080 or 1920×1200). Phew. The issue is with the older DisplayPort or HDMI standards.
It is however often possible to force some display mode that can fit with its bandwidth and frequency requirements to the older standards. I was able to play full 4K on an old Sandy Bridge laptop (HP Elitebook 8460p) with integrated Intel HD3000 graphic adapter, however only at mediocre 20 Hz resolution with GTF or CVT 1.1 timings (With CVT 1.2 reduced blanking even 24 or 25 Hz should be possible). At 1440p, it was capable of 30 Hz even on GTF. While 20 Hz is useless for watching films, 24 or 30 Hz may be sufficient (the TV does not flicker anyway, it just displays the same frame 2 or 3 times to fit the native 60 Hz panel…). For a slideshow of photos or working with Adobe Lightroom or Excel, even 20 Hz may be sufficient.
How to do it on Linux:
Connect TV to the HDMI port (I have only DisplayPort so I use a passive DP to HDMI adapter and then a regular HDMI cable. The graphic adapter can detect this scenario and output HDMI-compatible signal over DisplayPort wires). Use xrandr or better, a graphical tool arandr to see what is the name of this interface (mine is HDMI3).
Use this online tool (that is using older GTF timings) or command line tools gtf or cvt to generate timing values for your resolution. Default cvt timing tool is however not able to use the newer CVT 1.2 reduced blanking intervals for rates other than multiples of 60 Hz:
For 1440p at 30 Hz, enter
cvt 2560 1440 30
and for 4k at 20 Hz, enter
cvt 3840 2160 20
into terminal. These timings will be output for the commands using CVT timings:

If you however download and compile this CVT modeline calculator 1.2 you can push 4K thanks to reduced blanking intervals from 20 to 24 or even 25 Hz to still fit into the maximum 225 MHz supported by Intel HD3000/4000 and HDMI 1.3 protocols:

the first two of them to create regular blanking modes (more compatible), or the last three for CVT 1.2 reduced blanking modes (less compatible).

Finally you can open arandr or other GUI tool to select resolution, or use command-line to push this custom resolution to the TV screen. Some screens may not support these non-standard resolutions, refresh rates and timings, some will. Anyway compared to the always repeated statement how HD3000 cannot display 4K, this is clearly false – it CAN display this resolution, however at a greatly reduced refresh rate, so the signal fits into the 225 MHz limitation. If you can calculate the timings so that you fit into this restriction, and you have a compatible display device that can manage it, you can enjoy UltraHD on much older hardware, or a newer GPU but with DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.3 outputs etc. There are some compromises but for some use cases (Lightroom photo management, Excel, powerpoint slides) even the 20Hz refresh rate may be sufficient. Regular films are often at 23.975 fps so the one of the reduced blanking interval timings should be perfect for them, and 25 fps should be optimal for Europen-based „PAL“ recordings which are usually at 25 fps.
